My husband and I have been in retail for many decades working for large companies that restructure and downsize frequently at every economic hiccup. We always knew our days were numbered and we should own our own company but never could figure out the direction we should go.
One day, I got myself in a situation where I wanted to prove my business experience and abilities. In 2 weeks I put a small jewelry collection together and had my first two shows. I had beading experience from childhood but expanded my skills with YouTube. Both events supplied the funds to dive even deeper. Surprisingly this became a serious business that utterly delights our shoppers. I get to work with my husband, spend time creating jewelry and have a flexible schedule.
As the dollar gets weaker, retailers go cheaper. And it really shows in the fashion jewelry business. Bigger is not better when large bib necklaces are made from mass-produced resins and plastics. The profit on these items is astronomical and consumers are left with no choices. Astonished, also, by the high prices of multi-level marketing jewelry companies, I wanted to design something affordable, yet high quality using real gemstones that have natural beauty and offer healing properties. In essence, jewelry that would touch women’s souls. Women remark how beautiful our pieces are. We feel “Mother Nature does the hard part.”
Today we still focus on healthy, beautiful jewelry all made by hand. We have over 60 exotic gemstones set in several hundred settings. We have selections that fit every age and lifestyle. With every purchase we include a card describing the healing properties and a gift bag. Our website offers a Guide to Gemstone Meaning. We do have a few things that we don’t make like these little pixie bottles. We bring things in at customer request to fill a void or offer a value.
To keep prices low, we don’t have a store. We show at Arts and Crafts Festivals, Trunk Shows and Farmers’ Markets in Florida. We hope you can visit us at one of our shows. Visit us at http://www.facebook.com/WaterGemzJewelry or http://www.watergemz.com for more pictures and calendar.
